Friars Sign Sean Connolly to National Letter of Intent

PROVIDENCE, R.I.--Providence College basketball coach Pete Gillen announced today that high school basketball standout Sean Connolly has signed a national letter-of-intent to attend Providence for the 1998-99 school year. Connolly is a senior at Bishop Fenwick High School in Peabody, Massachusetts and had made a verbal commitment to Providence in August.

In making the announcement, Gillen said, "Sean Connolly is a tremendous outside shooter who has great passion for the game of basketball. He's a big guard who can also play small forward if the need arises. I think he'll be a great asset to our Providence team as a freshman." He added, "Sean is a tremendous student and he comes from a great family. He's been well-coached by Mike O'Brien at Bishop Fenwick."

The high scoring guard has been rated among the top 100 high school seniors in the country since last summer. Last season as a junior, Connolly led Bishop Fenwick to a 20-2 record , while averaging 33.0 points, seven rebounds and five assists per game. During his sophomore year, the 6-4, 190-pound guard scored 26.7 points with six assists and five rebounds per game. He is a two-time Catholic Central League Player of the Year and has already scored well over 1,000 points in his high school career. He will finish among the all-time leading scorers in the state of Massachusetts before his career is over.
