TAMPA, Fla. (AP) - Herbert Hill had 28 points and 16 rebounds, leading Providence past South Florida 77-72 on Wednesday night.

Hill had eight points, including a pair of rebound baskets, as Providence (18-10, 8-7) opened the second half with a 12-2 run to take 45-35 lead with 16 minutes left.

Jonathan Kale had a key rebound basket after a Hill miss that put Providence ahead 75-72 with 13.3 seconds left. South Florida, which put together a late 10-1 run to pull within 73-72, had a chance to tie it in the final seconds, but Melvin Buckley's 3-pointer was off the mark.

South Florida (12-17, 3-12) got 25 points and 14 rebounds from Kentrell Gransberry. USF has lost six straight games.

Keyed by Gransberry's eight points, South Florida used an 12-4 run to get within 65-62 at the four-minute mark.

Providence responded with 6 consecutive points, including a 3-pointer and a layup by Sharaud Curry. The guard finished with 17 points and five assists.

Gransberry had 13 points and seven rebounds in the first half, helping South Florida battle back from a 7-point deficit for a 33-all tie at intermission. Hill scored eight points and pulled down seven rebounds during the opening 20 minutes.
