CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - The 20th-ranked Providence College men's hockey team was defeated by No. 9 Boston College, 5-1, Friday night in game one of a best-of-three Hockey East quarterfinal series at Kelley Rink in Chestnut Hill, Mass. With the win, the Eagles take a 1-0 lead in the series. Game two is scheduled for Saturday, March 15 in Chestnut Hill, Mass.

The Eagles surged ahead quickly, scoring twice in the first 1:18. Pat Gannon tallied his fifth goal of the season at the 1:00 mark, while Ben Ferriero notched his 13th goal just 18 seconds later. The lead increased to 3-0 early in the second period when Ferriero ripped a slap shot from inside the blue line for his second goal of the night. Nathan Gerbe made the score, 4-0, at 12:04 when he tallied his team-leading 25th goal of the season on a four-on-three power play. The Friars got on the board late in the second period as junior Matt Taormina netted his ninth goal of the season at 18:17. Taormina rifled a shot from the top left circle that beat BC goalie John Muse.

Gerbe tacked on his second goal of the night and his 26th of the season at 13:47 when he skated in on a breakaway before beating PC goalie Ryan Simpson.

Muse finished with 31 saves for the Eagles, while Simpson and Tyler Sims combined to stop 28 shots.
