Sept. 13, 1997 Providence College Falls to PittsburghPROVIDENCE, R.I. -- The University of Pittsburgh defeated Providence College, 4-1, on Saturday, September 13 in BIG EAST men's soccer action at Providence, R.I. Sophomore midfielder Phil Matilla led the Pitt offense with two goals. Matilla opened the scoring at the 17:44 mark as he kicked in the rebound off his own shot from five feet in front of the net. Pitt sophomore forward Reagan Bender increased the Panthers' lead to 2-0 when he scored on a breakaway at 19:34. Sophomore Andrew McConville netted the lone goal for the Friars as blasted in a direct kick from the left side with 2:56 remaining in the first half. Matilla and freshman midfielder Brian Baleno each scored in the second half to give Pitt a 4-1 victory. Pittsburgh senior goalkeeper Chris Hanlon recorded five saves in the win. Providence junior goalkeeper Dan Pires registered five saves on 11 shots. Pittsburgh improved its overall record to 3-0-2 and 2-0-1 in the BIG EAST, while Providence dropped to 1-3 overall and 1-3 in the BIG EAST. Providence College returns to action on Wednesday, September 17 against Yale at PC's Glay Field.
