Sept. 28, 1997 St. John's Too Strong for ProvidencePROVIDENCE, R.I. -- The Providence College men's soccer team was defeated by defending national champions, St. John's, 4-1, Sunday, September 28 at Providence, R.I. The first goal of the game was credited to St. John's at the 12:44 mark when a PC defender inadvertently kicked the ball into his own goal. Sophomore midfielder Carlo Acquista scored St. John's second goal at 40:13 after receiving a pass from senior midfielder Jesse Van Saun. Junior midfielder Stefani Miglioranzi netted St. John's third goal at 44:59 on a pass from Carlo Acquista. Junior midfielder Robert Wile scored St. John's final goal at 63:40. The Friars' only goal was scored by senior captain Juan Acevedo at the 64:57 mark when he converted on a pass from freshman midfielder Dane Smith. St. John's goalkeepers Dani Braga and Jeffrey Stoklosa did not record a save in the win. PC's Dan Pires registered nine saves in the loss. St. John's improved its overall record to 8-0-1 and 4-0 in the BIG EAST, while Providence dropped to 2-7-0 overall and 1-5 in BIG EAST action. Providence College returns to action on Wednesday October 1 against the University of Rhode Island at Kingston, R.I.
