Sept. 3, 1997 Friars Fall to Boston College in Season OpenerCHESTNUT HILL, Mass. -- The Providence College men's soccer team dropped its season opener as it was defeated by Boston College, 2-0, Wednesday, September 3 in BIG EAST action at BC's Shea Field. Freshman forward Kevin Boyd provided all the Eagle offense, tallying one goal in each half. Boyd gave the Eagles a 1-0 lead as he kicked in a rebound from five feet in front of the net at the 36:20 mark. With 5:18 remaining in the game, Boyd blasted a shot from 25 yards that beat PC goalkeeper Dan Pires to seal the win for the Eagles. Boston College outshot Providence 15-8. BC freshman goalkeeper Chris Hamblin recorded four saves in his first career win. Pires made three saves in the loss. Boston College improved its overall record to 1-1 and 0-1 in the BIG EAST, while Providence dropped to 0-1 overall and 0-1 in the BIG EAST. Providence College returns to action September 7 at Notre Dame.
