BOSTON, MASS. - The Providence College men's cross country team finished second at the NCAA Northeast Regional Championship at Franklin Park in Boston, Mass. on Saturday, November 10. The Friars earned 46 points, while Iona captured the team title with 37 points. Providence automatically qualifies for the NCAA Championship along with Iona. Senior Max Smith (Dunedin, New Zealand) and sophomore Hayden McLaren (Christchurch, New Zealand) paced the field. Smith won the individual title with a time of 29:58.75. McLaren finished second overall with a time of 30:00.95 as he passed Abraham Ng'Etich just meters from the finish line. Ng'Etich finished third with a time of 30:01.10. Senior Ahmed Haji (West Hartford, Conn.) and freshman David McCarthy (Waterford, Ireland) placed in the top-15 individually. Haji took 10th place with a time of 30:14.95, while McCarthy finished 15th (30:20.35). Also scoring for the Friars was sophomore Richard Yeates (Dublin, Ireland). Yeates completed the 10K course in a time of 30:26.55. The top two teams at the NCAA Northeast Regional earn automatic berths to the NCAA Championship. The Friars will take part in the NCAA's for the 29th time in program history. A year ago, PC finished ninth at the NCAA Championships. The 2007 NCAA Championship is scheduled for Monday, November 19 in Terre Haute, Ind.
