Final Stats

SYRACUSE, N.Y. - The 20th-ranked Providence College field hockey team fell to No. 4 Connecticut, 1-0, in the BIG EAST Championship game on November 4. The tournament was held at J.S. Coyne Stadium in Syracuse, N.Y.

UConn's Lindsey Leck tallied what proved to be the game-winning goal with 2:50 remaining in the game as Katie Semanoff found her in front of the cage during a scramble.

It marks the second-straight year that Connecticut has defeated Providence in the championship game. Last year, the Huskies recorded a 4-3 victory in Louisville, Ky. to win the title.

In the first half of play, the two teams each recorded four shots and Providence held a 3-0 advantage in penalty corners. In the second half of play, UConn outshot the Friars, 12-0, and posted a 6-0 advantage in penalty corners.

Sophomore All-American Rachel Chamberlain (Branford, Conn.) registered nine saves in goal for Providence. Andrea Mainiero made two stops in goal for UConn, including a save during a one-on-one break away attempt in the first half by sophomore Nellie Poulin (Oakland, Maine).

The Friars fall to 14-8 on the year, while Connecticut improves to 20-2 overall. The Huskies earn the league's automatic berth to the 2007 NCAA Field Hockey Championship. The Friars will wait to see if they can obtain an at-large bid to the NCAAs. Selections will be announced on Tuesday, November 6 at 8:00 p.m. on CSTV.

Chamberlain, senior Abby Maguire (Southbury, Conn.), senior Michalagh Stoddard (Norwood, Mass.) and junior Jessica Lane (South Windsor, Conn.) were selected to the BIG EAST All-Tournament Team.
