Nov. 12, 1997 Providence College Loses to U.S. National TeamPROVIDENCE, R.I. -- The U.S. National Team defeated the Providence College Friars, 14-0, in women's hockey action on Wednesday, Nov. 12 at PC's Schneider Arena. Stephanie O'Sullivan (Dorchester, Mass.), one of nine former Friars on the U.S. roster, and Gretchen Ulion (Marlborough, Conn.) led the USA squad with four points each. The U.S. opened the scoring at 7:59 of the first when A.J. Mleczko (Natucket, Mass.) beat PC netminder Megan Marfione (Reading, Mass.) with a wrist shot. O'Sullivan added the final goal of the first for the U.S. team at 11:39. USA added four goals in the second period as Vicki Movsessian (Lexington, Mass.), Shelley Looney (Trento, Mich.), Mleczko and Kelly O'Leary (Auburn, Mass.) each scored. The U.S. team continued to pour on the offense in the third period as it scored eight goals, including two by former Friar Alana Blahoski (St. Paul, Minn.). Warwick, R.I. native Sara DeCosta earned the start in net for the U.S. team and made six saves in the win. Marfione and Pilar Christopherson (Sioux Falls, S.D.) combined to register 32 saves for Providence.
Providence will return to action when it opens the season against Boston College on Nov. 15 at Chestnut Hill, Mass.
