HAYWARD, Calif. - The Providence College softball team was posted a 3-2 record over the weekend at the Santa Clara Invitational in Hayward, Calif. The Friars now stand a 5-8 overall on the season. The Friars began the weekend on Friday, February 29 with a pair of victories. PC defeated Campbell, 5-3, as sophomore Christy Becker (Atlanta, Ga.) had two hits and three RBIs. Classmate Katelyn Revens (Warwick, R.I.) had three hits and drove in the game-winning run. Junior Jennifer Maccio (Huntington Station, N.Y.) earned the win as she pitched a complete game and allowed three runs on five hits and struck out five batters. PC then defeated Youngstown State, 9-1, in five innings. Sophomore Jenna Garcia (Morro Bay, Calif.) drove in five runs, four of which came via her fifth-inning grand slam. It marked the first home run of the season for the Friars. On Saturday, March 1, the Friars were defeated by North Dakota State (7-2) and by Sacramento State (8-0). In game against North Dakota State, junior Mary Rose Sheehy (Woodbridge, Conn.) had three hits, while senior Samantha Pittman (San Diego, Calif.) had two hits and drove in one run. Freshman Justine Stratton (Fresno, Calif.) also drove in one run.
Providence then capped off the weekend with an 8-7 win over Drexel in nine innings. Sophomore Teresa Bertels (Lower Gwynedd, Pa.) and Revens each drove in one run in the ninth inning to break a 6-6 tie as the Friars held on for the win. In all, Revens drove in four runs and had four hits in the game. Becker had three hits and one RBI, while Stratton added two hits.
The Friars are back in action on Friday, March 14 when they play Charlotte in the Winthrop Adidas Classic in Rock Hill, S.C.
