PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College softball team will play a home-opening double header against the University of Maine on Saturday, March 22 beginning at noon at Raymond Field.

The Friars (7-10) enter this weekend after playing at the Winthrop/Adidas Invitational in Rock Hill, S.C. where they posted a 2-2 record last weekend. On March 14, the Friars were defeated, 4-2, by Charlotte and then rebounded to post an 8-5 win over Memphis. In the win over Memphis, the Friars rallied from a 3-1 deficit as sophomore Jenna Garcia (Morro Bay, Calif.) hit a two-run home run, while junior Mary Rose Sheehy (Woodbridge, Conn.) hit a grand slam to lead the team. On March 15, the Friars defeated Gardner-Webb, 4-1. Junior Jennifer Maccio (Huntington Station, N.Y.) pitched a complete game, allowing just one run on five hits and striking out two batters. Sophomore Teresa Bertels (Lower Gwynedd, Pa.) hit her first career home run, while Sheehy had three hits and one RBI. Sophomore Katelyn Revens (Warwick, R.I.) was named to the All-Tournament team as she batted .333 with five runs, three walks and five stolen bases. Maine will mark the second consecutive America East opponent for the Friars as they dropped a 4-2 decision to Vermont on March 16.

The Black Bears (0-24) are seeking their first win of the season. Maine has been involved in eight one-run games, including four extra-inning contests. Most recently, the Black Bears played in the Hawaii Spring Fling Tournament in Honolulu, Hawaii. Ashley Waters was named to the All-Tournament Team as she batted .400 with two home runs. She leads the team in batting average (.333), runs (12), home runs (5) and RBIs (8).
